More about Sony as a major sponsor of the World Cup:

FIFA, the world governing body of football (soccer), has six major partners, who in turn are the major sponsors of the World Cup. (The World Cup itself has still other sponsors, in addition to the six.) In addition to Sony, the six partners include Addidas, Coca-Cola, Emirates (a major Dubai-based airline), Hyundai/Kia, and Visa--all non-competitors with Sony. Sony's commitment is for more than $300 million through 2014, whereas Emirates' commitment is for less than $200 million, and Coca-Cola's commitment runs through 2022.

For this Sony gets unprecedented opportunities to promote its products. Clicking on the Sony partnership logo on FIFA's official website brings up a Sony page that indicates, I believe, the likely thrust of their advertising during the World Cup. The first emphasis is on Alpha, with the slogan, "World Time, Captured by Alpha," offering wallpaper for your computer. The second is "Sony Brings 3D Home in 2010: 3D World Created by Sony," promoting Sony video cameras, Sony film production, and Bravia TVs. Third is "Sony is passionate about making football a deeper, more intense experience: Sony Group Football Project website." And the fourth is "Social Responsibility: Eye See III: Digital Photo Project for Children," emphasizing projects in Africa. These sound like advertising themes to me, and it is very hopeful to see Alpha in the mix.

Finally, on December 3, 2009, FIFA and Sony announced an agreement for Sony to deliver 3D footage of up to 25 World Cup games, for showing at special events and in a Sony-produced and Sony-distributed film story of the 2010 World Cup games. In addition, the possibility of live 3D is being explored.

The 2010 World cup games will run from 11 June through 11 July 2010.

Again, I believe that it is important that Sony introduce some ground-breaking cameras by the time these games begin.

By the way, on another hopeful note, Sony just posted a quarterly financial report for the last quarter of calendar 2009, indicating very strong net income (more than $1.75 billion, adjusted) for that crucial quarter.

Hi,
Today I I bought this camcorder to gift to my brother. I have a few questions about this item:

1. How long the battery lasts if I use it continuously for video?

2. Since it has an in-built capacity of 4GB, how long I can record the video? (I mean minutes)

3. How is the video quality?

4. Can I directly plug the camera to the TV and watch the video?

5. If I buy a 8GB SDHC card do I have to recharge the battery before I run out of this capacity?

6. How is the overall rating of this product? Can it be a good gift?

Shooting Tips and Techniques

Lighting the face with the main light slightly below eye level will help minimize darkening of deep-set eyes. But fixing dark circles under the eyes is probably better fixed by make-up and/or retouching.

"I had two lights on my subjects, one on each side at 45 degree angles."

Placing one light one on each side at 45 degree angles is a great way to copy a document but people rarely if ever look good under "copystand lighting."

Instead try to work with ONE LIGHT placed at the optimum angle for each given face. Most of the time some sort of light modifier (softbox, umbrella, or other type of diffusion) to soften the light will look better than a hard light.

"I currently have a CarlZeiss 62mm multi-coat protector at the end of my lens. Am I right to assume the polarize lens will go between my lens and multi-coat protector?"

The only purpose of your multi-coat protector is to protect the lens. No need to stack it on top of a polarizing filter. Use as few filters as you possibly can. The optimum number for sharpness would be zero. Don't look at a polarizing filter as a fix-all. It's not going to knock out a spectral highlight from a catch light. Much better to light it right to begin with.

Hi Walt,

Yes, another method is using the High Pass Filter (Filter > Other > High Pass)with PhotoShop. Doing one High Pass layer very lightly, then you keep duplicating the layer making your overall photo gradually sharper in steps until the desired result is achieved. The High Pass filter is still an old favorite and been around for a very long time.

There are a great many ways to apply sharpening. PhotoShop is remarkably dynamic. You can give the same assignment to a dozen well versed users, and they'll likely achieve the same goal in different ways.

If anyone would like to describe their technique for sharpening eyes, please feel free to join in.

One thing you might also want to consider NicJ, is brightening and clearing up the whites of the eyes just enough to look better yet natural.

DSLR cameras

Well I am back to the mind set that Sony never intended to make a true Pro level system, I think for my self I was hypnotized by brand name thinking that they can't fail, when in fact I read to much into Sony's business plan which again was never intended to be a pro level camera.

I can remember reading peoples concern with what Sony would do with the Minolta model, Well I think we have the answer FLOOD the market with under performers, let's be honest even the A900/A850 have very limited performance considerations one being poor ISO handling, they have their place but they are in dire need of a firmware update,

Sony is not in the Pro market and I now believe they don't want to be, it's us users that are trying to make these cameras something they are not.

I for one am looking into Nikon but Canon may be a consideration as well. I have kept my A700 but I may let it go as well, I tend to be brand loyal and find that that really does not matter here at make.believe

I have to make.believe I have a pro level camera!!

PS.. is it not amazing how here in the Sony forums we never get any input from someone from Sony?

That's what I thought might have caused it. I wonder if he ever figured it out since this post was from last year. I always turn my camera off because I'm afraid it will cause my images to disappear. It could cause damage to the camera also.
